Music Monday: Change  By Tracy Chapman

How bad, how good does it need to get?
How many losses how much regret?
What chain reaction
What cause and effect
Makes you turn around
Makes you try to explain
Makes you forgive and forget
Makes you change

-Tracy Chapman ‘Change’

The Youtube video featured the best performance of the song, I had to cut the Jay Leno introduction on account it annoyed the high, holy, hell out of me. Most people heard the song as part of an HBO campaign. Lately, I played the song on repeat, a warm-up act for lent, that season of change.

Now, the song poses a question for people trying to go back to a Canada, a version of the world actually, that never existed. The people wanting those good old days, those pleasant days, forget those usually came with the price. Those good old days had segregation, had residential schools, put people in a closet, made sure women stayed silent, made sure men kept silent and allowed some to hit other people with a big stick. The ‘political correctness’ people complain about on FaceBook and social media? I will take it.

I will take the dizzying change. The good old days scare me more in their certainties than the long stretch to the far horizon we can’t see yet.

  1. Thanks for reminding me how much I like Tracy Chapman. My favourite is probably Talkin bout a Revolution . I hear it was suggested as part of a playlist for the women’s march.

    1. I am not surprised and wanted to feature it here too. In the end, especially after not marching in Winnipeg, I had to think about what happens after that day. It’s the first step of many displays that will happen here and down in the states.
