Music Monday: Issues by Julia Michaels

I heard a lot of love songs in my time. Most of them have this air of insincerity, or I have attended way too many divorces weddings it’s clouded my judgment. I love the honesty in this track. Everyone has issues heading into a relationship, something I wished someone told me in my twenties. I remember one woman in university saying she and her boyfriend at the time never fight. Even I knew it carried a whiff of BS.

There’s a Yiddish saying, at least I think but I have not Googled it yet, a married couple has a graveyard full of each other’s faults. I guess it’s why my parents remained married for nearly 58 years, that and we’re Catholic. (It’s the long haul or none in my parent’s generation.)

‘Issues’ would also make a good first dance for the myriad of weddings happening around Winnipeg. Couples can classically waltz to it and it sets a more truthful tone to the day after the last piece of cake gets eaten, or the last wine glass gets emptied.

Cause I got issues
But you got ’em too
So give ’em all to me
And I’ll give mine to you
Bask in the glory
Of all our problems
‘Cause we got the kind of love
It takes to solve ’em

  1. Hey by the way, she just release it as part of an album ‘Nervous System’. It came out this week. I like it a lot … pop I guess, but I really like the quirkiness.
