Sometimes I close my eyes and take myself back to New York. It’s two scenes really like the one below, take on my final day on a Central Park bench:
The other came from the top of 30 Rock:
So much happened on that trip, and my diversion to Albany only encompassed the tip of it. For seven days, I cleared my slate and walked the city as if I lived in either an NBC/HBO comedy featuring a lone woman with an unlimited income. (Reality: Nope, probably not any of those characters.) New York inspires film, television, and books and nothing inspires more than New York during the Christmas holidays. From the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, it’s the start of the season including Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center, people skating on its rink, and events galore to wet people’s appetites for the season. Also, the temperatures make it look like a tropical destination, at least, to this Winnipeg resident.
On one level we see lights, lights, and more lights yet New York manages to keep things level, reminding people of those most in need and for some, the holidays just amplify the worse in people. It’s not any different in Winnipeg, but we don’t have the romantic comedies using us as a back drop-yet.
So here are two selections to ground the holidays in some reality. Plus, they are good songs and ones I keep going back to on Spotify.
So call on your angels
Your beaten and broken
It’s time that we mend them
So they don’t fade with the season
I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can’t make it out alone
I’ve built my dreams around you
I was in Toronto Dec. 18-23 and sang along with Choir!Choir!Choir! — and we belted out the Pogues’ song for 2.5 hours. I know it now very well!
